G-Dragon rocks Taipei like a boss
Cool, cute and charming, BIGBANG’s G-Dragon shows his one-of-a-kind side at his Taipei solo concert
If you are bold enough to don a jacket emblazoned with the word “boss”, you better prove you have got the swag to justify the term. And that was what G-Dragon did, captivating fans with his charming nature at 2013 1st World Tour: One of a Kind concert in Taipei Arena last night.
The BIGBANG leader’s first ever world tour kicked off on March 30 with sell-out shows in South Korea. Tickets to the two Taiwanese shows were snapped up by eager VIPs in 20 minutes. At the invitation of local concert organiser ONE Production, xinmsn attended his Taipei concert last night and had a preview of what Singaporean fans are installed for at his upcoming June concerts.
Even though there was an unfortunate early setback of an ankle injury, G-Dragon worked around it with a Segway and a cane, hyping the energy level at every concert with his theatrics. The cane, originally used as a walking aid, was upgraded to be a fashion item too, now that he is almost fully recovered.
With the concert concept based on ’the artist G-Dragon’, the singer-songwriter exhibited his many sides in the two and a half hours-long concert from the crowd-revving ‘MichiGO’ and ‘Heartbreaker’, full-of-attitude ‘One of a Kind’ and ‘Light It Up’, to the sweet ‘Butterfly’ and ‘Missing You’.
The dramatic rendition of ‘Obsession’ and ‘She’s Gone’ was definitely one of the most intense moments of the night. Exuding a look of menace and angst, G-Dragon slowly walked up to the highest level of the stage, upon which a lady in a red dress fell slowly to the ground.
The remix version of ‘Crayon’, combined with the highly popular ‘Fantastic Baby’, was another well-received segment, with the enthusiastic crowd singing along, simply having a good time.
And who could forget the melancholic ‘That XX’, with G-Dragon sitting on a throne, romancing the audience? He even decided to showcase the huge fedora hat that he wore to the press conference earlier in the day.
Sometimes cute, sometimes sexy, G-Dragon always has a way to capture the hearts of fans. In a mixture of English and Mandarin, he expressed how much he missed the Taiwanese fans (repeating ‘very’ a couple of times) and got the fans to do a shout battle, lovingly calling one side ‘baby’ and the other ‘honey’.
In his video prior to the encore segment, G-Dragon cutely attempted to chase the fans away, before using his fingers to form a heart. Despite doing a cute gesture on video, when fans requested for him to act cute, he immediately rejected, saying he could not do it.
Special guest Taeyang also showed off his Mandarin-speaking skills, with the typical introduction question of ‘Have you eaten? Are you full?’
After two encore songs ‘Breathe’ and ‘Bad Boy’, G-Dragon thanked the Taiwanese VIPS for their support, ‘I’ll never forget you so please don’t forget me. I promise you to come back soon with my brothers BIGBANG, so until then, please wait for us.’
Touched by their love and support, he also praised the fans for being the ‘best ever’, before concluding the show with a repeat of ‘MichiGO’ and a deep flying kiss. The second show in Taipei will be held later today (May 10).

G-Dragon feels lonely on solo tour without BIGBANG buddies
It is always good to have buddies you can count on. Even with the overwhelming stage presence that he possesses, K-pop group BIGBANG’s leader G-Dragon finds it hard shouldering the full load.
Speaking to the media before his solo concert in Taipei yesterday, he admitted, “Without my members, I do feel a bit lonely, especially when I got injured. If my members are around, they can help out with the performances. So I do miss them.”
That said, his supportive fellow BIGBANG members Taeyang, Seungri and Daesunghave been helping him by taking turns to make cameo appearances at his previous stops.
After shows in Seoul, several Japanese cities and Beijing, G-Dragon’s 2013 1st World Tour: One of a Kind comes to Taipei. This is G-Dragon’s second solo concert tour, but his first ever worldwide tour. He performed to a full house of enthusiastic VIPs yesterday night, and will put on the second show later today (10 May).
At the invitation of local organiser ONE Production, xinmsn was part of the Taipei concert crowd last night. It is currently unknown which other BIGBANG member will show up with G-Dragon at Singapore’s show.
The hardworking singer-rapper revealed that it was pretty tough to put on a two-hour show initially and had moments of self-doubt, unsure if he could last till the end.
“However, I am now physically used to it, and can enjoy the show’s atmosphere,” he reassured.
Just two weeks ago, G-Dragon injured his ankle at the Osaka concert and had no choice but to make some changes to the show. Even though he showed up at yesterday’s press conference holding a cane, he appeared to be in good condition and assured everyone that he is almost fully recovered, emphasising that Taiwanese VIPs are lucky to be able to enjoy the original content of the concert.
G-Dragon even joked, ‘Everyone said I looked so cool holding the cane, thus I brought it with me today.’
Another highlight of G-Dragon’s outfit has to be his huge black fedora hat, an item from Saint Laurent’s latest Spring/Summer women collection.
When asked about the concept of his attire, G-Dragon answered humorously with a simple ‘aunt’ and added that he often sees aunts wearing such hats. He even commented that host Mickey Huang’s concept was the perfect complement of his — ‘uncle’.
Known for being a fashionista, G-Dragon said that he loves to shop, and when he is on such tours, he will try to check out the shops when he has the time to do so.
He also revealed that another recent hobby of his: reading comics, something he often did in his primary school days.
